The 100 Day Project was created in response to the predicament many artists often find themselves in: trying to balance their artistic life with their jobs, school, and (in my case) teaching. Written over the course of 100 days at one sentence per day, this project attempts to prove that it is possible to create art even if there is no time, even if you have to resort to writing one sentence per day.

Sushi's New Wave Showcase

Conversations With A Poet

Sushi's New Wave Showcase: 10th Avenue Arts Theater: There's a lot of talent out there:

"In a city where even the most seasoned choreographer scrambles to find a venue, Sushi's New Wave Showcase is a valuable opportunity. The Showcase, which started in 2003, commissions and premieres new works by emerging San Diego and Tijuana artists. The works presented last weekend at the 10th Avenue Theater were imaginative and boldly original. Excited viewers asked, "Where have these talented people been hiding?" The program of five dances opened with a personally inspired poem written and performed by Jakey Toor, a UC San Diego alumna, graduate student, and ArtsBridge Scholar. She's performed internationally and most recently at Sushi's 4x4. In her solo "Conversations with a Poet," Toor masterfully recounted pivotal relationships from her past. It could have just been funny, watching her bounce around in a polka-dot dress, skipping, stretching and rambling on, but Toor was so believable, so emotionally invested, that you hung on every word. Her text and movement flowed seamlessly and conjured wonderful images of a restless girl challenging a mentor under a tree on a lazy summer day. Her voice easily moved between the two characters and a narrator. In one section she swaggered like John Wayne, plopping her feet over each other, then turned to the audience and asked, "How do you make sense of what's around?" It felt as if you were there, way back in the summer of, oh, about 1994......That youthful untarnished sense of freedom was a pervasive theme throughout the program, and it was refreshing. The only thing missing was a crystal ball that could offer a glimpse into the future; one couldn't help wonder where these fine artists will end up."

Hide & Seek

"Now in its 10th month, Sushi's 4X4 can no longer be called a "flash in the pan" experiment. It's become a sought-after proving ground for some of the region's best performers, and its continued success proves that people want to see dance and performance art in a casual setting. Here's the magic formula: Every month a slate of eight to 10 artists (selected by Liam Clancy) are allotted 10 minutes on a 4-foot-by-4-foot stage at the Bluefoot Bar and Lounge. Performers get instant feedback from a jacked-up crowd, and the crowd is treated to a venerable buffet of performance art. This month the most polished performances came from Ahmiel Semien, Groove on Tap, Jakey Toor and Jason Connors, and Iain Gunn.......Toor and Connors were a solid duo in "Hide and Seek," a playful dance narrative about a young-love relationship. Toor moved confidently upon the tiny stage, and Connor's theater experience shined through in his expressions and timing. (Turns out he's performing in Tom Stoppard's Arcadia at the Cygnet Theatre)."

Adversary

YouTube plugin error

"For those who haven’t caught the buzz yet, “4X4” is a stripped down format where artists get 10 minutes on a 4-foot-by-4-foot stage, about the size of a low coffee table. Every month about nine or 10 artists try out new work, and the audience is encouraged, nay, is compelled to give them feedback. Because the space is so intimate, wildcard interactions between performers and viewers abound. In the words of Forrest Gump, 4X4 “is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re going to get.”......... In “Adversary,” Jakey Toor tiptoed and twirled to happy Irish rhythms, but was distracted by one glove on her hand. The gloved hand became an animated puppet and whispered into her ear like a close friend, but the glove relationship got out of hand. The glove represented her personal insecurities and through clever encounters, Toor confronted them. At one point the glove was a gun, then they boxed each other. In victory, she yanked the glove off. “Holy crap, that was excellent!” shouted Clancy, the mastermind and curator of the series. And it was."

Convsersations with a Poet

YouTube plugin error

"The 4X4 performance series at the Bluefoot Bar & Lounge in North Park (San Diego) is simply the best thing since chocolate chip cookies. Liam Clancy and Jeremy Gaucher of SUSHI Performance and Visual Art have cooked up a slate of evenings in which the entire event is a continual surprise. And, having staged only three shows, 4X4 is the hottest place to be in town. The December 12th 4X4 spectacle was the third in the series, and you couldn’t have crammed one more body in the beyond-packed back room at Bluefoot. The November 14th event was very crowded with about 120 people (at the time the room looked filled), and last Tuesday’s show was seen by possibly 170 dance-and-performance lovers — people who knew what they were there for. Thunderous applause followed each of the ten acts. And exactly what were these I-don’t-care-how-long-I-stand-as-long-as-I-see-a-great-show viewers viewing? Only the most vibrant, compelling, dynamic, alive, and fearless dancers and performers anywhere. Period....... Jakey Toor presented “Conversations with a Poet”, a solo piece uniting poetry and choreographic movement. The poem was terrific, telling a story about “a young girl and a homeless man”. Jakey’s strong, gestural, organic movement provided emphasis, highlighting, and new directions to the flow of the poem. This was a bravura showcase incorporating a lot of text and a lot of movement, wonderfully performed by one person..."

"....The premise of the 4x4 series is simple: Have 10 artists, hand-picked by Clancy, perform for 10 minutes or less atop a small stage; mix in the casual mood of a neighborhood bar; and see what happens. The hope is that the event will become for dancers and performers what a poetry slam is for spoken-word artists and poets. According to Clancy, the limitations of the stage, the brevity of the performance and the looseness of a bar setting allow local emerging artists to teach and—through the informal critiques of a bar crowd—be taught...."
